Mini Chol (Immitation Cheese by Scandic)

Please note that the above mentioned product, available through health food stores and some restaurants, actually contains coagulated Skim Milk and Rennet. Please inform those establishments that the product is defintely not Vegan. Rennet is the result of diced calf stomach being soaked in brine.

Other "Soy" cheeses may contain Lactose (lactic acid) which is the sugar in milk; whilst others may contain Caseine (sodium caseinate) which is the protein in milk. Depending on whether you are vegetarian or vegan, these products may be suitable for you.

SOYSAGES (6th Nov 2000)

DORSOGNA, a major smallgoods manufacturer in Western Australia, has introduced a range of Soy Sausages. These sausages may be suitable for most vegetarians but not for vegans as they contain small quantities of egg albumin and sodium caseinate. Dorsogna inform me that they may have a vegan version available mid 2001, depending on the ingredients from their suppliers.

The introduction of locally made vegetarian products should be seen as a positive move. Although we don't like any of the meat processing companies, and are repulsed by their treatment of our companion animals, we should at least inform Dorsogna that their effort to introduce non-meat products is appreciated. If they can see a profit in these products then they may introduce more and that will only help to change the eating habits of more people. They are available from Action and Foodland stores. (sadly Dorsogna has discontinued these soy sausage products due to poor sales)

Also, for the lovers of Fruccio Ice Cream, Dorsogna inform me that their product is now "Dairy Free" as the supply of palm oil no longer contains sodium caseinate (used as drying agent). There are however some older containers that only claim to be Lactose free, this does not mean that the product inside is not dairy free, just the container may be old stock.

I noticed your site about cheese and thought you might like to know that the company Kingland (Qld), which do cheese, cream cheese tofu etc, are all vegan.

Please note that they list lactic acid as one of their ingredients but the company has guaranteed that the lactic acid is from a plant source; beetroot. I don't eat it very much but it does taste good.

Hope this helps.
Sherri

Note: Kingland Soy products are available through Dewsons Supermarkets in WA , if not in stock please ask them to order in.
