What can you do?

Whilst the Animal Welfare Bill 2001 has much support from the Labor Party, The Greens, the Democrats and some of the Liberal Party, it is necessary for members of the public to contact their respective representatives in Parliament urging the Bill be given the upmost priority.

The purpose of this Bill is to repeal the current Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1920 and provide for the protection of animals by regulating the use of animals for scientific purposes, and prohibiting cruel, inhumane or improper treatment of animals. The current Act of 1920 is based on a British Act of the late 1800's and as such is totally inappropriate for the 21st Century. This Bill when passed will form the basis of Animal Welfare issues for this century, please read it. The Bill covers a greater range of animals, provides for greater powers of inspection and has increased penalties for acts of cruelty, abuse and neglect.

Write, phone or email the Honourable Tom G Stephens BA MLC imploring him to give the Animal Welfare Bill 2001 his utmost attention.

Please write, phone or email Mr John R. Quigley MLB (member for Innaloo) and Mr Mark McGowan BA. MLB (Member for Rockingham & Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier) and thank them for their support for the Petition against Circuses using animals and for their support for the Animal Welfare Bill 2001.

Write, phone or email your local member of Parliament and seek their support in passing the Bill through Parliament and for the inclusion of legislation barring Circuses using Animals entering Western Australia.

Remember - be polite, many members of Parliament are supportive of the new Bill. Stick to the issue of the Bill and banning of Circuses using animals.
